Gladiator 2 Dominates Maltese Cinemas in 2024
Ridley Scott’s Gladiator 2 emerged as the most popular film in Maltese cinemas in 2024. KRS released its list of the top ten films that captivated local audiences last year, with the much-anticipated sequel to the 2000 classic Gladiator taking the lead. Notably, the film holds a special place for Maltese viewers, as portions of it were filmed on the island, with many locals participating as extras.
Gladiator 2 continues the story years after the death of Maximus, as young Lucius finds himself drawn into the Colosseum. With Rome’s emperors extending their power to conquer his homeland, Lucius is compelled to fight for his people. Fuelled by grief and a burning desire for justice, he seeks inspiration from the past to summon the courage and honour required to restore the empire to its former glory.
The Maltese box office charts for 2024 were dominated by sequels, prequels, and adaptations, with only one original film managing to break into the top 10. Following Gladiator 2 in second place was Deadpool and Wolverine, a highly anticipated team-up in the Marvel universe, while Inside Out 2, the heartwarming animated sequel, secured third place.
In fourth place was Despicable Me 4, proving that Gru and his mischievous Minions remain a firm favourite among families. Rounding out the list were Wicked, Moana 2, It Ends With Us, Wonka, Paddington in Peru, and Dune: Part 2.
Blockbusters and animated fantasy tales unsurprisingly dominated Maltese cinema in 2024, reflecting global trends in audience preferences. However, Gladiator 2 stands out not only for its compelling narrative but also for its role in putting Malta in the spotlight as a prime filming location.
