10-Year-Old Ayrton Tonna Shines in Italian Karting Championship
Being at sea level, the site is subject to flooding and though there have been attempts to drain the area for agriculture, seasonal flooding, brackish groundwater and exposure to salt-laden grigal gales, rendered it unusable. Reverted to the wild, a dense thicket of tamarisk formed, to which an olive grove was later added.
A star is rising in the world of karting as 10-year-old Maltese driver Ayrton Jon Tonna made an unforgettable debut at Round 2 of the prestigious ROK Cup Italia held at the Castelletto circuit. Facing off against a competitive grid of 25 drivers in the Mini Rok class, Ayrton delivered a stunning second-place finish in Race 2, missing out on the win by a mere 0.078 seconds.
Representing Malta’s budding karting talent, Ayrton was joined by fellow driver Miguel Spina, who also competed strongly in the Mini Under 10 category despite a series of challenges. For both young racers, the Italian circuit posed a new and demanding test, but it was one they rose to with determination.
Ayrton’s performance across the weekend was a standout, particularly his Race 2 heroics. Starting from pole position, he led the opening laps before dropping back to fourth. But showing nerves of steel and strategic brilliance, he mounted a late charge. In the final lap, Ayrton executed a daring overtake around the outside, passing three drivers in one sweep and going wheel-to-wheel with the leader into the final corner. He crossed the line just fractions behind, securing a remarkable P2 finish.
Reflecting on his experience, Ayrton said, “This was my first time racing at the 7 Laghi Kart track and it turned out to be an exciting weekend! After a good qualifying session where I placed P4, I had ups and downs in Race 1 but bounced back in Race 2. I’m proud of the result and the progress I’ve made.”
The young driver, named after Formula 1 legend Ayrton Senna, showed signs of a promising future, displaying both maturity and racecraft beyond his years. His performance has not only made waves in the local motorsport community but also gained attention on the international stage.
With this impressive debut at Castelletto, Ayrton Jon Tonna is a name to watch in the coming rounds of the ROK Cup Italia and beyond.
