Experience the Natural and Cosmic Wonders of Dwejra in Gozo Tonight

If you’re around Gozo and looking for something meaningful to do this evening (12 June), make your way to St Cecilia Chapel in Għajnsielem at 6:30pm for a special event that shines a light on one of the island’s most extraordinary places, Dwejra.

The evening features a talk delivered in English by Prof. Joseph Caruana, an astrophysicist and lifelong admirer of Dwejra’s landscape, sea, and skies. His presentation will take you on a journey through millions of years of natural history, uncovering the layers of geology, ecology, and human connection that make Dwejra such a fascinating site.

Expect insights into the towering coastal cliffs, fossil-rich rock formations, and delicate ecosystems that have adapted to this dramatic corner of the Maltese Islands. From the famous Inland Sea to lesser-known features hidden beneath the waves, the talk offers a fresh perspective on a place many visitors only glimpse from a distance.

The session will then take a step beyond the horizon, exploring Dwejra’s exceptional night skies. Known for its low light pollution, this area offers a rare view of the stars and the Milky Way, something that is becoming increasingly hard to find across Europe. Prof. Caruana, who has carried out both astrophysical and environmental studies here, will explain why preserving these dark skies matters and how they connect us to the wider universe.

The evening will end with an open Q&A and informal discussion, followed by drinks provided by Delicata Winery The event is free of charge and part of a year-long series organised by Wirt Għawdex, a group dedicated to protecting Gozo’s heritage.

For those interested in science, nature, photography, or simply a deeper understanding of the islands, this is a rewarding way to spend an evening away from the usual tourist trail.

Free registration is available online. Doors open shortly before the talk begins, so it’s worth arriving a little early to take in the setting. Register here.
