Two Moons and Two Suns, A Bold New Exhibition Arrives in Valletta

From yesterday, Thursday 3 July to Wednesday 20 August, Valletta will welcome an exciting international art exhibition titled Two Moons and Two Suns, hosted by the Malta Society of Arts. This innovative show invites visitors to explore the blurred boundaries between fact and fiction through a captivating and immersive experience.

Taking place at the historic Palazzo de La Salle, Malta’s oldest arts institution, the exhibition features works by 13 artists from around the world. These creatives come together to explore what’s known as the ‘fictive archive’: archival materials that have been reinterpreted, reimagined, or even invented to tell fresh and sometimes unsettling stories.

Curated by Claire Ducène and Margerita Pulè, Two Moons and Two Suns is the culmination of a two-year research project called Fictive Archive Investigations. The project examines how memory, identity, and truth can be shaped or distorted through archives, challenging visitors to reconsider the way stories and facts are constructed.

The exhibition is diverse and multimedia, with everything from poetic installations and imaginative maps to augmented reality and nostalgic objects. Themes of island life, ecological concerns, and the tension between real and imagined landscapes run throughout. Visitors move through the show much like reading a book, with the story unfolding chapter by chapter.

“The archive today is a contested space, especially in an era of misinformation,” explains co-curator Claire Ducène. “This exhibition encourages visitors to question what we accept as truth and to recognise that sometimes fiction can reveal deeper realities.”

The venue itself plays a vital role in the experience. Palazzo de La Salle’s rich history and stunning architecture add another layer to the exhibition’s dialogue between past and present, memory and imagination.

Alongside the exhibition, a symposium titled Fiction(s) in Archives will take place on July 4th and 5th at the same venue. It will feature talks and panel discussions with the artists and guest experts.

Artists featured include Elise Billiard Pisani, Balthazar Blumberg, Josephine Burden, Anna Calleja, Céline Cuvelier, Katel Delia, Claire Ducène, Axel Fourmont, Bettina Hutschek, Margerita Pulè, Stéphanie Roland, Matthew Schembri, and Raffaella Zammit.

As co-curator Margerita Pulè says, “This isn’t simply an art show. It’s a collection of perspectives that invites us to challenge our assumptions about truth and embrace uncertainty as part of our cultural journey.”

Two Moons and Two Suns is free to enter and is open daily at the Malta Society of Arts in Valletta until 20th August 2025.
