Flying to Malta with Ryanair? Say Goodbye to Paper Boarding Passes Next Week

Ryanair is shaking things up for travellers across Europe, and if you are flying to or from Malta soon, you will want to be ready. Starting next week, the airline will phase out printed boarding passes and move fully to digital ones. For many holidaymakers this will feel like a natural step, since most of us already store tickets on our phones. For others, particularly those less comfortable with technology, it may feel like an unwelcome nudge into the digital age.

So what does this mean for your Maltese getaway? In short, you will need the Ryanair app or access to the airline’s website to check in and display your boarding pass. Once you complete online check in, your digital pass will appear in the app and can be shown at security and at the gate. Ryanair says the shift will keep queues moving more quickly, reduce waste, and help travellers stay updated on any schedule changes.

If you forget to check in before arriving at the airport, the airline will charge a fee to do it there, so make this part of your pre travel checklist along with packing sun cream and sorting airport transfers. The good news is that digital passes work offline in the app once downloaded, so weak airport Wi Fi should not derail your plans.

Worried about mishaps with your phone? If your battery dies or your handset stops working before security and you have checked in online, the airline will issue you a pass at no cost. If trouble strikes after security, Ryanair staff will assist since your details are already in their system. Travelling without a smartphone altogether? As long as you check in online beforehand using another device, you can still collect a boarding pass for free at the airport.

The change has sparked debate. Critics argue it may disadvantage older travellers or those without smartphones. Ryanair’s leadership insists most passengers are already used to digital travel and that the move will ultimately make flying smoother.

If you are heading to Malta, this is one small thing to prepare for before you indulge in crystal clear bays, honey coloured fortresses, and lazy evenings by the Grand Harbour. Download the app, charge your phone, and you will be set to enjoy the islands without any check in surprises. And maybe take a portable charger, because no one wants to miss a sunset photo or a smooth boarding call!
