Rough Seas and Thundery Showers Forecast for Malta as Cyclone Passes Nearby

A Mediterranean cyclone developing over the Libyan Sea is bringing a spell of severe weather across parts of the central Mediterranean, with heavy rainfall and damaging winds affecting several regions.

Fortunately, the Maltese Islands are expected to remain on the outer fringes of the storm system, sparing the country from its most intense impacts.

According to current forecasts, the primary effects locally will be very strong east-north-easterly winds and rough to very rough seas around all coastlines. These conditions are expected to persist throughout Monday 16 and Tuesday 17 March, creating hazardous marine conditions and potentially disrupting sea travel.

In addition, bands of unstable weather rotating around the system may occasionally reach the islands. Residents can expect periods of rough seas accompanied by intermittent heavy thundery rain showers, particularly during this afternoon and evening. While widespread flooding is not anticipated, brief intense downpours may lead to temporary water accumulation in low-lying areas.

Mariners, swimmers, and coastal residents are advised to exercise caution, as strong onshore winds will generate significant wave action along exposed shores.

Authorities continue to monitor the system closely and advise the public to stay updated through official weather bulletins.
