Pierre Farrugia, a local adventurer, recently set off from Birgu (Vittoriosa), paddling along the coast towards the historic fortress. From the outside, the cave doesn’t look particularly impressive, but the real surprise awaits inside.
The cave’s roof has long since collapsed, allowing sunlight to pour into the chamber and illuminate the crystal-clear water below. Massive limestone boulders, believed to have fallen from the cave and the fort above, create a dramatic landscape unlike anywhere else along this stretch of coastline.
Beneath the surface lies another fascinating sight. At least one historic cannon can still be spotted resting on the seabed, and it is thought that others may also remain underwater. While their exact history is unknown, one theory suggests they were once stored within Fort Ricasoli before the cave roof gave way, sending them into the sea below.
