Flowers have always had a language of their own. They can speak of love and loss, devotion and desire, remembrance and secrecy – meanings that have travelled across cultures and generations. In Victorian times, this became known as floriography, the elaborate art of communicating through flowers.

This September, The Language of Petals: A Floriographical Memoir brings this fascinating floral language into the contemporary art world, gathering 35 Maltese and Malta-based artists for an exhibition that looks at flowers in an entirely different light.

Rather than simply celebrating their beauty, the exhibition explores flowers as symbols of memory, emotion and identity. Working across a variety of artistic media, each participating artist has chosen a flower and explored its traditional meaning, reinterpreting it through their own contemporary perspective. The result is a varied collection of works in which petals become metaphors for everything from intimacy and mourning to resilience, transformation and remembrance.

The exhibition offers a fresh take on floriography, moving beyond its Victorian origins to consider why we continue to use symbols to express feelings that can sometimes be difficult to put into words. Here, flowers become quiet messengers, carrying stories that are personal, cultural and sometimes deeply emotional.

The idea of a ‘memoir’ is central to the exhibition, with each artwork contributing a fragment to a larger collective story. Together, the works create a contemporary floral archive – one that moves between beauty and decay, attraction and loss, silence and confession.
