Malta ranked first globally in COVID-19 recovery index
Nikkei Asia’s latest COVID-19 Recovery Index has ranked Malta as first in infection control, vaccination and mobility, followed by Chile, Bahrain and the UAE.
With a score of 73.0, Malta took over China, who were previously ranked as first, and have since been demoted to ninth place due to their lack of progress in the social mobility field. As it stands, Malta has very few restrictive measures in place, has given 834,543 vaccine doses, 20,048 of which were booster shots, and until yesterday, has under 300 active COVID-19 cases.
The index ranks more than 120 countries and regions on their infection management, vaccine rollouts and social mobility at the end of every month. A higher ranking indicates that a country or region is closer to recovery, with low numbers of confirmed cases, better vaccination rates and less stringent measures.
The index measures a score between 0 and 90 for every country; the sum of three categories and nine subcategories. These include:

Mobility
The Nikkei Asia Recovery Index sources their data from Our World in Data, Google COVID-19 Community Mobility Reports, Oxford COVID-19 Government Response Tracker by Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford, Cirium, an aviation data and analytics company and Orbital Insight, which analyses satellite data.
Also, it is crucial to note that in the index, countries and regions are compared with one another for most of the subcategories. Therefore, for instance, in the share of people who have received at least one dose subcategory, if a country’s percentage is higher than 90% of all other counties, it gets a 10, if it is 80% higher than all other countries, it gets a score of 9, and so on.
