Malta records first ever win in Women’s World Cup Qualifiers

Malta wins for the first time ever in the Women’s World Cup Qualifications, beating Azerbaijan 2-1

The national women’s football team, led by Mark Gatt, earned their first point in their 2023 World Cup qualification group in September, following their draw with Bosnia at the Centenary Stadium. This was Malta’s first ever point in the proper qualification round for a Women’s World Cup.

It was the second positive result for Malta in eight games against the Bosnian team. The first positive result was a 1-1 draw during a 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifier, in a then-called Second Category group.

The team continued to make history this week, recording team’s first ever win in the Women’s World Cup after beating Azerbaijan 2-1 at the ASK Arena, in Baku.

Dorianne Theuma scored the first goal in the second half and Emma Xuereb, who was a second-half entry, scored the winning goal.

Malta has now climbed to the fourth place in Group E of the World Cup Qualifiers.
