VisitMalta supports Japanese Blockbuster shot in Malta

Over Malta’s rich 100-year long movie-making history, support has been given to various foreign productions filmed in Malta, to be broadcast in countries and regions all over the world.

Enter Confidence Man: HERO Edition. Originally a television show on Japan’s Fuji Television, Confidence Man JP follows the comic journey of a scammer as she tries to make do with copious amounts of money from yakuza bosses and evil businessmen. The show is a comedy-heist series, which is a joy to all who watch it.

The movie is the third in its series and promises to be multi-billion-dollar blockbuster like its two predecessors, which were filmed in Hong Kong and Malaysia. The fact that this was filmed in Malta, with the island being presented as itself, will aid in exposing the beauty of the country to Japanese, Chinese and South Korean tourists.

“Having this movie shot in Malta is definitely a big plus for the Asian Market,” Mr Shingo Endo, VisitMalta’s Japan and South Korea representative said, adding that with group bookings scheduled to start in Juin 2022, “we will continue to use this movie and its success to promote the sheer beauty of the Maltese Islands, giving tourists the opportunity to visit the various sites which have been used for the filming of this production.”

Though the movie is currently scheduled for Asian release, there are plans in the pipeline for it to be available on streaming platforms, especially following the recent success of non-mainstream productions in English, on giant platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime.

The movie production received the support of the Malta Film Commission and of VisitMalta, who were crucial in organising the pre-production visit to the Maltese Islands, when the movie was still in its early stages.

“This is a side of our marketing endeavours which is rarely seen, but which is of extreme importance. While we obviously recognise the importance of mainstream advertising, showing our support to movie productions such as this one, can translate to the islands being exposed to millions of people, in movies which will remain available forever. Moreover, we have already received impressive feedback from support which was previously given to productions in Italy, Switzerland and Greece. Productions such as this movie become a sort of a fixed advertorial of Malta, Gozo and Comino, featuring spots which are not always defined as tourism hotspots, but which are yearning to be explored by tourists,” Mr Carlo Micallef, Deputy CEO and Chief Marketing Officer of VisitMalta said.
