Human Polymorphism explored in Claire Farrugia’s New Body of Work
In order to get more attention, popularity, and likes on social media, online users alter their looks and behaviour in accordance with what’s trendy. This “human polymorphism” is the subject of the paintings on display, especially as it relates to looks. The same things are shown in two distinct ways: naturally and through a mobile app filter.
Farrugia divides her time between her work as a pharmacist and her artistic endeavours. Through her work, especially those that are available online and on social media, she strives to understand truth and reality in relation to photos. Her artwork aims to demonstrate how social media pictures, with their utter disdain for reality and truth, may be a type of post-truth.
Farrugia’s personal self-portraits are displayed in a separate area of the exhibition. By analysing and painting her own picture while occasionally utilising such mobile filters, Claire Farrugia is monitoring herself. Instead of being a vanity exercise, this procedure was a journey toward acceptance and respect for oneself. Farrugia is instead attempting to uncover some kind of truth in the imagery that surrounds us and comprehend what people are trying to say when they present themselves as something they are not, especially to those who just have a virtual acquaintance with them.
This is Claire Farrugia’s first solo exhibition and is currently being held throughout the month of Août at The Palm Court Lounge at The Phoenicia Hotel, Malta. The exhibition has been curated by Dr Charlene Vella. The exhibition will run till the 31 of Août and admission is free.
