What’s On in Malta this Weekend?

November is here, the evenings are getting shorter, and Malta’s events calendar has put a lot into one weekend. Here’s where we’ll be heading!

Burlesque at the Corinthia Palace

The MalTease Burlesque Festival is back for its third year, and it has moved into the ballroom of the Corinthia Palace in Attard. Twenty-two performers from 14 countries are on the bill across Friday and Saturday, with Maltese dancers sharing the stage with acts from Canada, the US and Australia. This year there are two headliners, and each night has a different line-up, so going to both makes sense. Doors open at 7 pm, and the show starts at 8 pm. Tickets cost €15 for standing and up to €32 for the front row. Seats go to whoever books first, so don’t leave it until the last minute. It’s strictly 18+. Make an effort with your outfit, because there’s a prize for the best dressed.

Theatre all Weekend

Oscar Wilde’s Salomé

Oscar Wilde’s Salomé opens at the Manoel Theatre on Friday. Adrian Buckle directs, and British actor Timothy Blore plays the title role. Stay on after Sunday’s show for the Q&A. Over at the University, Revamp MT is staging Everybody’s Talking About Jamie at Sir Temi Zammit Hall, and it’s the feel-good pick of the weekend. If you want something heavier, try Ilma at Valletta Campus Theatre, or Il-Baħar Ikħal Skur, a Maltese version of Rattigan’s The Deep Blue Sea, at Spazju Kreattiv.

Music on Saturday night

Teatru Salesjan

Opera fans can catch La Traviata at Teatru Salesjan in Sliema at 7 pm. It’s a shorter chamber version, and it still has all the heartbreak. Up in Mdina, In Sacred Grandeur marks 300 years since composer Benigno Zerafa was born. The Malta Philharmonic Orchestra will play his restored works, taken from the original manuscripts in the Cathedral Archives. It starts at 8 pm.

A Slower Sunday

Ta’ Pinu Basilica

Head to Palazzo de la Salle in Valletta at 7.30 pm for Polish Quintets, an evening of music by Grażyna Bacewicz and Aleksander Tansman. If you’re in Gozo, the Malta International Piano Festival at Ta’ Pinu Basilica has free lunchtime recitals by young pianists this weekend.

Bringing the kids?

Science in the City’s Performance Festival runs all weekend in Valletta and nearby, with theatre, comedy, magic, and hands-on workshops for families.
