Saving Our Blue drop-in session with VR Activities at Esplora this Sunday

This Sunday 1 October, Esplora Interactive Science Centre will once again be hosting the team members behind Saving Our Blue, following previous successful sessions this summer. Run by the Ministry for the Environment, Energy and Enterprise, Saving Our Blue is a conservation project dedicated to preserving Malta’s marine life and coastal ecosystems. In addition to their formal work, Saving Our Blue organise regular beach clean-ups around Malta and Gozo, collecting thousands of kilos in waste each summer. The last campaign closed earlier this month on 10 September at Pretty Bay (Birżebbuġa), with fun activities including a yoga session, volleyball, and even a boat trip.

The team behind Saving Our Blue is composed of environmentalists, scientists and local volunteers, all of whom are committed to conducting research, collaborating with NGOs and the private sector, as well as advocating for policies and sustainable practices which protect Malta’s marine ecosystem in the long run. On Sunday, visitors will have the opportunity to meet the team, who will be answering any queries and delivering updates regarding their work in a comfortable setting.

During the session, you’ll also get to try out some educational interactive and online games within the themes of cleaning up the marine environment, which can be found on their official website. What’s more, Saving Our Blue is offering a recently launched virtual reality experience that’ll give users a closer look at local aquatic life in some of the Maltese Islands’ Marine Protected Areas.

This technology was announced during this year’s campaign launch back in June of this year, by the Minister for Environment, Energy and Enterprise, Miriam Dalli. There, it was announced that a survey conducted by the National Statistics Office in collaboration with Saving Our Blue found that 62% of Maltese people try to avoid plastic packaging, while 63% opt for reusable shopping bags and containers. These findings are promising and only further highlight the efforts of Saving Our Blue. This Sunday is not just an opportunity to gain a better understanding of how these goals are being met, but it’s also a chance to partake in the movement while enjoying yourself!

The event will run from 10 am to 2:30 pm – all you have to do is show up. See you there!
