No Time To Spare: A Collective Contemporary Art Exhibition from the Gabriel Caruana Foundation
Last Friday, a new introspective art exhibition opened at The Mill – Art, Culture and Crafts Centre in Birkirkara. No Time To Spare is the second collective exhibition organised by the Gabriel Caruana Foundation, a non-profit organisation dedicated to supporting and promoting contemporary art in Malta, as part of their SPRING Artistic Programme for Emerging Artist 2022 – 2024.
The exhibit’s concept was developed and curated by the foundation’s very own Co-Creative Director and Curator, Elyse Tonna. With its title being derived from a collection of essays by the American writer Ursula K. Le Guin, Tonna describes No Time To Spare as “a collective call urging us to reflect upon the diverse forms of agency that shape our spaces, cultures and the interconnected world which extends beyond the human realm.”
Rachelle Deguara, Claire Farrugia and Sheldon Saliba are the featured local artists. For this programme, they have been challenged to deeply reflect on certain concepts and keywords in order to develop their artworks. Throughout this three-part process, they received mentorship from Elyse Tonna for the Creative Process, Raffaella Zammit who oversaw the Artistic Programming, Martina Camilleri who led the Engagement Process.

Rachelle Deguara is a Performing Arts student, as well as the co-founder of Young Progressive Beings (YPB), a youth activist NGO. With her work she delves into the dichotomy of power and subservience, constraint and liberation, as well as subjugation and empowerment.
Claire Farrugia is a practising pharmacist with an MA in Art History (University of Malta). She explores the blurred lines between truth and lies through the artistic mediums of paintings, sculptures and installations centred on the human figure.
Sheldon Saliba is a visual artist with a background in art history. He questions contemporary realities by superimposing future speculations over nostalgic interpretations of archives and cabinets of curiosities, and by combining them with sculptural pieces.
