The talented Manchester United Women’s team has arrived in Malta for a winter training camp as they prepare for the thrilling competition that the 2023–24 Women’s Super League (WSL) season will present.

Actually, this is not the team’s first visit to the island. The team had a rather successful visit about this time last year in January of 2023, where they won against the local Birkirkara team. As the host of one of the team’s main overseas fan clubs, as well as United’s official destination partner through Visit Malta, Malta welcomes the entire women’s first-team roster and coaching staff with open arms.

This time around, the Red Devils are gearing up for a friendly match against the Dutch club PSV Eindhoven, planned specifically for this training camp. Head coach of United Women Marc Skinner expressed his excitement about the trip back to Malta, saying, “We are delighted to be returning to the wonderful island of Malta this January. After such a warm welcome last year, we cannot wait to play in front of our great Maltese fans, against a top side in the form of PSV.”

Manchester United Women, who presently stand at fourth place in the English Women’s Super League, hope to improve team cohesiveness and strategy during the training camp. Taking on PSV, who themselves are currently fifth place in the Eredivisie Vrouwen league, should give them the competitive motivation they’re looking for.

The much-awaited game will take place tonight, January 5, and Kickoff is set at 6 pm local time. The game will be held in Paola’s Tony Bezzina Stadium, which can seat up to 3,038 people. Tickets cost just €2 and can be bought here. Moreover, the Malta Tourism Authority will be donating all proceeds to charity!

The team, which includes English goalie Mary Earps, Spanish World Cup winner Irene Guerrero, and fellow countrywoman Ella Toone, will take full advantage of the Mediterranean island’s amenities in order to be ready for any and all upcoming matches; “My players and staff are really looking forward to a few days of hard work on the pitch, and enjoying Malta’s excellent hospitality off it,” said Skinner.

Having said that, even though work and play mean the same thing in their field, they’ll still be having some fun and soaking up the sun during their stay on the island. And, if their Instagram post of Balluta Bay is any indication, they’re definitely enjoying the change in scenery/weather so far!
