Local theatre company to stage production of ‘The Beauty Queen of Leenane’

2016 revival by the the druid theatre company

Local theatre company MADC is putting on a production of The Beauty Queen of Leanne with dates in February and March, 2024.

The Tony-nominated play ‘The Beauty Queen of Leenane’ follows the turbulent relationship between a spinster daughter and her elderly mother, that culminates into a harrowing conclusion. This international hit was first put on by The Druid Theatre Company in Galway,  1996. These coming months, MADC (Malta Amateur Dramatic Club) is bringing the play to Malta!

The tragicomedy tells the story of Maureen Folan, a plain and lonely woman in her 40s. Being that she is her 70 year-old mother’s caretaker, she has always felt chained to a simple life in her rural Irish hometown of Leenane. After becoming entangled with Pato, a construction worker who goes back and forth between London and Leenane, Maureen gets what might be her last shot at love. However, her weak yet manipulative mother Mag does everything in her power to stand in the way of it; whether it’s through bad-mouthing or concealing letters or revealing embarrassing half-truths about her daughter’s past.

‘The Beauty Queen of Leenane’ was written by four time Oscar nominee Martin McDonagh, who is best known for ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing’, ‘Missouri’, and ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ which recently opened in cinemas. The upcoming production will star local actors Isabel Warrington, Andrea Pace, Nicholas Jackman and Alex Weenink, under the direction of Adrian Buckle. Currently, there are six dates; February 23 to 25, and March 1 to 3, 2024. Each performance will be held at the MADC Playhouse in St Venera from 7.30 pm to 9.15 pm.

Tickets cost €25 and can be purchased from the MADC site www.madc.com.mt. This production is supported by The Embassy of Ireland in Malta. Do note the play is not suitable for those below the age of 16.
