Carnival season to kick off with Ħamrun Parade this Sunday
While the main celebrations in Floriana and Valletta are set to take place from February 9 to 13, Carnival is celebrated all over the island. A feast of colour is expected to thrill the streets of Ħamrun once more this Sunday, February 4, as the much awaited ‘Parata tal-Baned’ launches this year’s Carnival festivities!
‘Parata tal-Baned’, or ‘Band Parade’ in English, is a celebration of Ħamrun’s rich cultural past in addition to being a carnival. The tradition, an important event in Ħamrun’s cultural calendar, will take place from 9.30 am to 1 pm along St. Joseph High Road, offering a morning full of fun activities and distinctive local flavour. All three of the Ħamrun Bands will be making out to the thrilling and colourful event, along with the 1st Ħamrun Scout Group, the Żejtun Band, the Big Friends Guggen Musik, and the Brazilian Batuca Beat Band.
The parade comes as a collaborative effort by the Ħamrun Local Council and Festival Malta, offering a variety of activities appropriate for all age groups. Visitors will be treated to a magnificent display of regional bands, colourful costumes, and energetic parades that perfectly capture the spirit of Maltese celebration. In addition to embracing the spirit of the Carnival season, the event provides a stage for exhibiting local talent and customs.
The ‘Parata tal-Baned’ is a brilliant illustration of how traditional celebrations of culture and community can revitalise a town by bringing people from all walks of life together. Perhaps the size of our culturally vibrant island is the reason why such community events have remained alive for all these years. Having said that, both locals and those who are hearing about Ħamrun for the first time are welcome to the event. It’s a great way to immerse oneself in the culture and experience the best of Malta in Winter.
We promise it’s worth waking up a bit early!
