Former President and ex-Prime Minister Eddie Fenech Adami Hits the Big 9-0 Today

Eddie Fenech Adami, a lawyer by profession, took the reins of the Nationalist Party back in 1988. Even though his party scored the most votes in 1981, the party fell short of securing a parliamentary majority.

In the 1987 election, however, the Nationalist Party emerged victorious and assumed government leadership.

Fenech Adami played a pivotal role in spearheading Malta’s EU accession process. Despite his party’s defeat in the 1996 election, they triumphed in 1998, reigniting Malta’s EU bid. Subsequently, a successful referendum in 2003 sealed the deal. Fenech Adami concluded his tenure as Prime Minister in February 2004, transitioning to the role of President.

Quite the journey! Happy 90th Birthday, Eddie!
