Witness a chaotic European show at the Manoel Theatre this weekend

This weekend, from February 9 to 11, Teatru Malta is presenting a co-production with four other European theatres at the Manoel in Valletta. The Best European Show is being held at the Manoel Theatre in Valletta, as part of the Carnival festivities.

Watch what happens when a tragicomedy takes place in a modern-day Europe setting. An impressive 52 countries will be putting on their own shows competing for the coveted title of “Best European Show”. Meanwhile, a jury is tasked with the difficult task of choosing the European Theatre Festival’s first winner, which is modelled after the Eurovision Song Contest. What they don’t know is that the task at hand is much more difficult than anyone could have predicted.

Tension builds with every second that goes by, as the stakes get higher and higher. Almost anything that can go wrong does, and anarchy breaks out just when it looks like everything is under control. The final evening turns into a mess of unanticipated turns. Enjoy an engrossing tale of politics, personal aspirations, romantic liaisons, and bold artistic ideals emerges as the pivotal night draws near.

However, the drama continues off stage. All of a sudden, the European theatre landscape is completely upended, and the audience is an essential component of the show. Prepare yourself for an intense emotional rollercoaster where laughter and tragedy meet and forever change the landscape of European theatre.

This European spectacle will bring together theatre makers from Italy, Kosovo, Poland, Slovenia, and of course Malta. The show was co-written by Haris Pašović and Marko Bratuš, with a diverse 14-person cast directed by Haris Pašović. Shows are taking place at 7pm on Friday and Saturday, then at 6 pm on Sunday. Tickets can be purchased here. Do note that people under the age of 18 will not be admitted.

The production is being staged in collaboration with Fondazione Teatro Due Parma (Italy), Kosovo National Theatre (Kosovo), Teatr Opole (Poland), Slovene National Theatre Nova Gorica (Slovenia). This project is supported with an ETC Development Grant. ETC activities are co-funded by the European Union (@creative.eu).
