Malta Celebrates 60 Years of Independence with Royal Visit

Malta is set to commemorate 60 years of independence with a special royal visit. The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh will visit the island from 7 to 10 October, adding a touch of regal significance to this historic milestone. The announcement, made jointly by the Maltese Government and the British High Commission, has created anticipation both locally and among visitors to the island.

For those not in the know, The Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Edward, is the younger brother of King Charles III. He inherited the title in March 2023. It was previously held by their late father, Prince Philip.

The Duchess of Edinburgh, Sophie, married Edward in 1999, becoming an important figure in the British Royal Family.

Their visit will highlight the strong historical ties between Malta and the United Kingdom, a bond that has endured centuries. Malta’s connection to the British Royal Family is particularly profound. Queen Elizabeth II, before becoming monarch, lived on the island between 1949 and 1951. At the time, Prince Philip was stationed here as a Royal Navy officer, and they resided at Villa Guardamangia in Pietà.

The Queen often spoke fondly of her time in Malta, regarding it as a rare period of normalcy in her life. In 2007, the royal couple returned to Malta to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary, further solidifying their affection for the island.

Malta gained independence from Britain on 21st September 1964, marking the end of almost 200 years of colonial rule. The upcoming visit of the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh will symbolise the lasting connection between the two nations, with shared history and mutual respect still thriving today.

Tourists visiting Malta during this time can enjoy the added excitement of a royal visit while exploring the island. For many, royal visits to Malta evoke fond memories, Queen Elizabeth II returned several times during her reign, and her personal connection to the island gave each visit special significance. These royal occasions celebrate Malta’s history and reinforce the enduring relationship between Malta and the UK. As the island prepares for this significant anniversary, tourists will have the chance to witness a moment of history.
