Michela Scerri Secures Historic Silver, Qualifies for Taekwondo Junior Grand Prix Finals

Michela Scerri from Iron Taekwondo League (ITL) continues to make waves on the international taekwondo stage, earning a silver medal at the E3 Qualifier for the ETU Grand Prix in Serbia. With this impressive result, she has now officially qualified for the Junior Grand Prix Finals, becoming the first Maltese athlete to achieve this milestone.

Competing in Nis, Serbia, just a week after her world championship debut in Korea, Michela showed exceptional skill and determination. In the quarterfinals, she faced Bosnian Hena Melez and claimed victory in two thrilling rounds. The match was tightly contested, but Michela delivered stunning, last-second techniques in both rounds—a spinning kick in the first and a headshot in the second—to secure her spot in the semifinals.

Next, she took on the top-seeded Croatian, Sara Prpic. After three hard-fought rounds, Michela emerged victorious, continuing her strong form into the final. There, she faced Greece’s Ioanna Tsitaki in a challenging match. Despite an early setback, Michela remained competitive throughout, but Tsitaki’s tactical defense ultimately earned her the win.

Michela’s silver medal at this prestigious event not only reflects her incredible talent but also cements her place at the Junior Grand Prix Finals, set to take place later this year. This remarkable achievement caps off an intense year of training and competition for Michela, with 10 international events and four training camps under her belt.
