Instead, Imagine the most exquisite floral arrangement, but instead of fresh flowers, picture delicate, shimmering petals formed from fine wire, silk threads, and tiny glass beads. That’s ganutell, an elegant, handmade craft that has been passed down through generations in Malta. 

Traditionally, it was used to create intricate floral decorations for churches, adorning religious statues and altars with everlasting blooms. Today, this stunning artistry is making a comeback, with artisans crafting breathtaking jewellery, home décor, and bespoke wedding accessories. However, pop into a local parish church and you may well find plenty of ganutell decorations.

Ganutell finds its origins in 17th-century Italy before making its way to Malta, where it flourished under the watchful hands of skilled nuns and artisans. The word itself is thought to come from the Italian ‘canutiglia,’ referring to the fine metal threads used in embroidery. Maltese artisans perfected the craft, combining delicate wirework with colourful beads and silk to create intricate designs that mimic nature’s finest flowers. Over the centuries, this super delicate art form began to fade into obscurity, but thanks to a renewed interest in traditional Maltese crafts, ganutell is experiencing a revival.
