The Curmi Legacy: In Conversation with Carnival Seamstress Enya Curmi

For many, the Valletta carnival is a time of celebration, music, and colourful performances. But behind every elaborate costume and intricate design lies months of dedication, creativity, and craftsmanship. Enya Curmi is a passionate costume designer whose family legacy is woven deep into the fabric of the carnival itself.

Growing up in a household where carnival was more than just an event, Enya was immersed in the art of costume-making from a young age. Her uncle, the legendary Paul Curmi, affectionately known as Pampalun and the King of Carnival, along with her father, also Paul Curmi, played a pivotal role in shaping Valletta’s grand festivities. “Carnival runs in our blood,” she shares. “It’s not just something we do; it’s who we are.”

What began as a childhood fascination turned into a lifelong vocation. With a deep-rooted passion for costume design, she pursued formal studies in fashion. Today, she creates breathtaking costumes for various dance companies, each piece crafted with meticulous detail and love.

Every year, the Valletta carnival brings new themes, and this year was no exception. From fierce viking warriors to bold African-inspired ensembles and elegant Asian-themed attire, her designs transform dancers into living, breathing works of art. “Every costume tells a story, and I want to bring that vision to life.”

Despite her expertise, she never works alone. Carnival remains a family affair, with her father conceptualising ideas and her mother assisting with sewing. “It’s a team effort,” she says with a smile. “We’ve been doing this together for as long as I can remember.”

Beyond designing and crafting costumes, Enya is also an active participant in the festivities. This year, she took her passion one step further by donning one of her own creations and joining a dance company on in Piazza St George.

As Valletta carnival continues to evolve, so does the legacy of the Curmi family.  “Carnival is about tradition, but it’s also about creativity and reinvention. I’m proud to be part of something that brings so much joy to people.”
