Malta Philharmonic Orchestra to Lead Celestial Journey at Foundation Day Concert

Tomorrow evening, the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra and the Mediterranean Youth Orchestra, under the direction of Michael Laus, will present a cosmic-themed programme featuring John Williams and Gustav Holst.

On Saturday, 5 April 2025, the Foundation Day Concert will offer audiences an unforgettable night of music and imagination, as the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) joins forces with the Mediterranean Youth Orchestra (MYO) under the baton of esteemed conductor Michael Laus. The concert is set to take place from 8:00 pm to 9:30 pm.

The evening will begin with John Williams’ Olympic Fanfare and Theme, a rousing and majestic opener that sets the tone for the night’s space-themed journey. The centrepiece of the programme is Gustav Holst’s orchestral masterpiece, The Planets—a seven-movement suite that paints a musical portrait of each planet’s unique character and energy.

From the thunderous march of Mars to the serene fade of Neptune, Holst’s work takes listeners on a sonic voyage through the cosmos, combining imaginative orchestration with emotional depth. As Holst himself believed, music has the power to capture the vastness of the universe where logic and reason fall short.

This year’s Foundation Day Concert promises to be a stirring tribute to both science and art—a celebration of sound, stars, and shared experience.
