Last Chance to Catch a Beautiful Exhibition on Childhood and Belonging in Gozo
If you happen to be on the Maltese Islands this week, make some time to visit a truly touching exhibition at the Citadel Cultural Centre in Gozo. It’s only running until 25 July, so this week is your last chance to catch it.
The exhibition, called ‘Dreams of Past and Present’, is the work of Maltese artist Casey Caruana. She uses a mix of poetry, printmaking and painting to explore themes close to us all, such as childhood, memory, identity and the sense of belonging. The pieces are deeply personal and inspired by Casey’s own experience of migration and the bittersweet feeling of leaving behind a childhood and a home.
What makes this show stand out is how it captures the quiet tension between past and present. The artwork invites you to think about how our memories shape us, how time blurs moments into nostalgia and how identity shifts over the years. It is not just about looking at art on a wall but about stepping into someone’s story and reflecting on your own.
The exhibition includes linocut prints, oil paintings and poems. Each piece tells part of a larger story about longing and change. You might find yourself recognising feelings of loss and hope or the complicated way belonging can feel, especially when you have had to move from one place to another.
Located within the historic Citadel, the Cultural Centre itself is worth a visit. It is in Gozo’s charming old town and offers stunning views alongside a dose of culture. After you have explored the exhibition, take some time to wander the narrow streets, enjoy a coffee at one of the nearby cafes or soak in the island’s relaxed pace.
The Citadel Cultural Centre is easy to reach by car or public transport from Mgarr, Gozo’s main ferry terminal. If you’re travelling from Malta, the ferry to Gozo takes around 25 minutes, with regular services throughout the day. Once in Gozo, local buses and taxis can get you to the Citadel, which is well signposted.
The exhibition is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm, and entry is free. In case of any last-minute changes, it is advisable to check the Cultural Centre’s website or social media before visiting.
If you are planning a trip to Gozo or the Maltese Islands before the end of July, do not miss this chance to experience a thoughtful and moving exhibition. It touches on universal themes through a deeply personal lens.
