Traditional Maltese Restaurant Ta’ Kris Relocates After 25 Years
After 25 years of serving traditional Maltese comfort food to locals and visitors alike, Ta’ Kris has officially closed its original location in Sliema. Sunday, 3 August marked the final day of service at the much-loved eatery, which had become a go-to for authentic home-style dishes in the heart of the town.
Tucked away just off the bustling Sliema seafront, Ta’ Kris had long been a familiar name in Sliema’s dining scene. Set in a former bakery, the restaurant’s warm, rustic interior and hearty menu made it a firm favourite with Maltese families, tourists, and anyone with a craving for proper local cooking. Whether it was slow-cooked rabbit, stuffed aubergines, or bragioli, the food always felt like something out of a home kitchen, utterly generous, unfussy, and full of flavour.
But while the Sliema chapter has come to an end, it’s by no means goodbye. The team behind Ta’ Kris is preparing to open a brand new location in nearby Gzira, at 154 Triq ix-Xatt, right on the waterfront. The new space promises to carry the same soul and identity, just with a bit more room to grow.
Owner Kris Mifsud announced the decision to relocate earlier this year, citing the need for a larger and more adaptable space after two and a half decades in Sliema. Though the old building held many memories, it was time to evolve.
In a farewell shared across social media, the team thanked their loyal customers and staff for years of support, describing the journey as “full of joy, challenges, growth, and lifelong memories.” Hundreds responded with messages of love and gratitude and shared stories, from first dates to family reunions, all held together by a meal at Ta’ Kris.
There’s something about restaurants like this that goes beyond the food. Ta’ Kris became part of people’s routines, part of their Malta experience, part of their celebrations and traditions. For visitors, it offered a taste of the island’s heart. For locals, it was simply reliable — a place where you always knew what you were getting, and that you’d be looked after.
Now, as the team puts the finishing touches on the Gzira location, the feeling is one of both nostalgia and excitement. It’s not about starting over; it’s about continuing something that works, in a space better suited to what Ta’ Kris has become.
So while the doors in Sliema may have closed, the welcome is still just as warm, just a little further down the coast.
See you in Gzira!
