Bunting, Bands, and Fireworks, Your Guide to September’s Festas

Naxxar

Ah, Malta in September. The summer crowds have thinned, the sun still dares to scorch, and the villages are getting ready for a competitive show that makes Wimbledon look like a quiet afternoon tea. Of course, we are talking about the Maltese festi, those colourful, utterly brilliant village feasts that honour the islands’ patron saints.

You can expect streets decked out in bunting, marching bands meandering down alleys, and the smell of something deep-fried drifting from every corner. Locals are buzzing with excitement, kids chase each other around church steps, and suddenly, you realise that you’ve stumbled into something genuinely special, unique and absolutely delicious.

This September, Malta and Gozo are pulling out all the stops. The month kicks off on Saturday, September 6, in Valletta with the feast of Our Lady of Consolation. The following day, Sunday, 7 September, Qawra celebrates St Francis of Assisi, Sliema honours St Gregory the Great, and Żurrieq throws a party for St Catherine. Think of it as a giant party but with saints, fireworks, and excellent street food.

Monday, 8 September, is a national holiday, and several villages,  Mellieħa, Naxxar, Senglea, and Xagħra in Gozo,  all celebrate the Nativity of Our Lady. Picture yourself strolling through cobbled streets, past churches decorated in flowers, munching on pastizzi, and soaking up the decor.

Later in the month, Żabbar wows on 14 September, Valletta and Kirkop light up on 21 September, and the month wraps with Marsa on 28 September, celebrating the Stigmata of St Francis of Assisi. And yes, there will be fireworks. Lots of them. Possibly enough to make a small European capital jealous.

Attending a festa is an invitation to dive headfirst into Maltese culture, meet locals who genuinely love a good knees-up, and stuff your face with treats like imqaret (deep-fried date parcels of heaven). Pro tip: arrive early, bring your camera, and wear comfy shoes. You’re going to be on your feet, laughing, dancing, and possibly dodging a stray banda trumpet.
