Hedymeles | Must-See Exhibition at il-Kamra Ta’ Fuq This September

Opening on 21 September at il-Kamra ta’ Fuq, Eric Attard’s debut solo exhibition Hedymeles runs until 5 October. The exhibition presents a striking body of work that fuses Renaissance-inspired technique with myth and philosophy, marking one of the season’s cultural highlights.

With Hedymeles, Attard introduces visitors to a series of luminous, layered paintings that draw on both Renaissance methods and his background in philosophy. Each work resonates with the depth of a short novel he authored,  exhibited as a hand-bound volume within the show,  yet the paintings hold their own as independent creations.

Built through as many as twenty layers of paint, the works achieve remarkable radiance and depth. Light seems to emerge from beneath the surface, animating scenes of hybrid figures, harpies, and fantastical beings that move between the sensual and the grotesque. It is a visual world where myth becomes a lens for exploring post-human existence, desire, and disillusionment.

Born in Malta in 1992, Attard first studied fine art as a teenager at Valletta’s School of Art before pursuing philosophy at the University of Malta. His artistic language has since developed through a self-taught practice that consistently weaves together philosophical thought, Renaissance influences, and elements of magical realism.

Hedymeles, curated by Melanie Erixon, is his first solo exhibition after participating in several group shows.
