A Family Day for a Sustainable Future at Ħal Tarxien This Saturday
On Saturday, 4 October, explore the past and shape the future at the Ħal Tarxien Prehistoric Complex, one of Malta’s UNESCO World Heritage sites. This special event, Mill-Preistorja Tagħlima Għall-Ġejjieni (Lessons from Prehistory for the Future), forms part of the Malta Sustainable Development Action Days, organised in parallel with the European Sustainable Development Week.
The initiative spans three weeks and brings together government entities, voluntary organisations, businesses, and individuals to raise awareness about sustainable development and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
From 3:00pm to 6:00pm, visitors can take part in a variety of talks and practical activities that explore the connections between Malta’s prehistoric past and the choices we make today. Children will enjoy an engaging hands-on workshop focused on seeds and plant growth, where they will plant seeds in organic pots filled with compost, examine their structures under a microscope, and learn how to identify seeds that grow into different fruits and vegetables.
Discussions will also highlight the nutritional and environmental value of common seeds such as beans, sesame, cumin, fennel, cotton and seed oils, while showing how these everyday ingredients contribute to popular foods like hummus, tzatziki and sesame snaps, as well as serving as sustainable protein alternatives.
Adults will have the opportunity to attend a series of short talks in Maltese on themes of urban development and the healing power of nature. The programme includes curator Katya Stroud with Bla krejn mnejn sa fejn?, architect Ruben Abela presenting M’għandniex kwiet: Millirħula għall-ibliet, and curator David Cilia with Id-duwa tan-natura.
Attendance is free of charge, though places are limited and pre-booking is required.
