Final Carnival Events Called Off Today in Valletta as Strong Winds Sweep In

Anyone hoping to round off Carnival with one last evening of colour and confetti in Valletta has had their plans cut short. Strong winds have led organisers to cancel key celebrations in the capital, putting safety ahead of the grand show.

After discussions with civil authorities and weather officials, Festivals Malta confirmed that the Grand Defilé along St Anne Street in Floriana would not go ahead. The evening programme scheduled for St George’s Square in Valletta has also been cancelled.

The decision was made with public safety in mind. Carnival floats are no small matter, towering structures paired with detailed costumes, lighting rigs and technical equipment. With gusts picking up across the island, the risk to performers, crew and spectators was simply too high.

While the atmosphere may feel a little deflated, it is not all lost. Visitors can still view the colourful floats parked at St James Ditch until around 9.30pm. It offers a somewhat quieter chance to appreciate the amazing craftsmanship up close, without the usual crowds and music.

Once conditions improve and winds ease off later in the evening, the floats will be carefully transported back to their warehouses.

Carnival in Malta is known for its super lively energy, great floats and dramatic displays, yet moments like this are a reminder that the weather occasionally has the final say. If you are in Valletta tonight, it might be a good excuse to duck into a café, enjoy a warm drink, and let the wind do its thing outside.
