Maltese Artist Chris Ebejer Creates State Gift Presented to Pope Leo XIV

A remarkable bronze artwork by renowned Maltese artist Chris Ebejer has been presented as an official state gift to Pope Leo XIV during a state visit by the President of Malta, Myriam Spiteri Debono, to Vatican City on Monday, 2 March.

The presentation took place during an official meeting between the President and the Pope, where the artistic piece was offered on behalf of the Maltese people. The gift symbolises Malta’s deep historical and spiritual ties with the Holy See and reflects the country’s rich Christian heritage.

The artwork, designed and created by Ebejer, features a monumental bronze relief depicting Saint Paul the Apostle and commemorates the historic moment of his arrival on the island of Malta in AD 60. This event, which followed Saint Paul’s shipwreck on the island, remains one of the most significant episodes in Malta’s Christian identity and cultural history.

Ebejer described the piece as a detailed artistic composition, developed with exceptional care and precision. Sharing images of the creative process on his social media pages, the artist highlighted the many hours of work and craftsmanship that went into producing the relief.

The creation of the bronze artwork was a demanding undertaking that involved collaboration with several skilled craftsmen working under Ebejer’s artistic direction. The final result blends artistic expression with architectural detail, creating what the artist describes as a miniature architectural composition.

This is not the first time that Ebejer’s work has reached the Vatican. In 2010, he was commissioned by the Archdiocese of Malta to create a silver statue of Christ the King. The statue was presented to Pope Benedict XVI by Archbishop Paul Cremona during the Pope’s historic visit to Malta in April 2010 at the Floriana Granaries.
