Goodbye Drought, Hello Storms, Malta's Wet Week Starts Today
If you were caught in the odd shower over the weekend, or heard the odd rumble in the distance, brace yourself, because it looks like this is only the beginning. Today is Monday, and the Met Office says the whole working week ahead will be a damp one, as Malta’s September storms get going in earnest.
The islands have just come off the back of an exceptionally dry summer. Well over 100 days passed without any real rainfall, and the Met Office confirmed it was the first summer in six years without measurable rain. That run finally broke over the weekend, and forecasters expect the unsettled pattern to continue through the week.
Here’s the day by day breakdown:

Monday 14 September: showers likely, locally thundery. Feels like 29C, with a high of 27C and a low of 23C. Winds from the east-north-east, picking up to a fresh breeze by the afternoon.
Tuesday 15 September: isolated showers, feeling like 29C with a high of 28C. Winds shift to the north-north-east before settling northerly.
Wednesday 16 September: more isolated showers, similar temperatures around 28C to 29C. Northerly winds easing off later in the day.
Thursday 17 September: the wet weather starts to clear, with partly cloudy skies replacing the rain. Feels like 29C, high of 29C, winds from the west-north-west.
Friday 18 September and Saturday 19 September: skies stay partly cloudy, temperatures climb back towards 30C to 31C, and the unsettled pattern eases off completely.
A few things worth keeping in mind. Rainfall won’t be spread evenly. Some towns and villages could see a proper downpour while others nearby stay largely dry, so don’t assume your area matches the general forecast exactly. Winds will also be noticeably stronger than they’ve been all summer, especially Monday and Tuesday, so secure anything loose outdoors.
If you’re heading out, UV levels are still sitting around 6 to 7 despite the cloud cover, so sun protection is still worth thinking about even on the showery days.
Bottom line, keep an umbrella within reach until Thursday, expect a windier few days than usual, and don’t be surprised if your corner of Malta gets soaked while the next town over stays bone dry.
