'The Merchant of Venice' with a 1940s twist at Theatre Next Door this weekend

After much preparation, an exciting new production is coming to Theatre Next Door in Magħtab this weekend. Teatru Salesjan’s youth Shakespeare company, Roaring Voices, is putting on The Merchant of Venice with a twist.

Prepare yourselves for a passionate performance from this Friday 3 November to Sunday 5 November. As part of Teatru Salesjan’s Nurture Culture Programme, this is their 5th production inspired by a Shakespearean classic.

Set in Venice, the antisemitic trader Antonio borrows money from the Jewish moneylender Shylock to assist his friend in wooing Portia. Shylock shows no mercy when Antonio is unable to pay back the loan and demands a pound of his flesh. Portia, who is now married to Antonio’s friend, dresses as a lawyer to save Antonio.

However, Roaring Voices take it a step further and turn the clock forward on the classic tale. This adaptation puts a pivotal spin on the story, setting it in the 1940s, which adds a whole new layer to the recurring theme of antisemitism in the play. Thus, with the era’s brewing war serving as a backdrop for the story, tensions between the antihero Shylock and the Christian society he lives in.
