Christmas in the Capital: A month-long programme of festive events in Valletta kicks off Tonight

Just a week ago, on November 20, The Minister for the Arts, National Heritage, and Local Government, along with the Chair of the Valletta Cultural Agency, unveiled the schedule of events for ‘Christmas in the Capital’. Prepare for a series of non-stop festive activities and attractions throughout all of December, in of course none other place than Valletta! 

Minister Bonnici asserted that the programme gives families from Malta and Gozo the chance to visit the beloved cultural hub that is Malta’s capital city throughout the Christmas season. He asserted that such celebrations are best held in Valletta, emphasising that the Government is committed to facilitating cultural activities in the Capital City and numerous locations throughout the country. “This event builds on our commitment to celebrate culture in its various genres and to continue supporting artists,” he stated.

Furthermore, the Chairman of the Valletta Cultural Agency, Jason Micallef, stated that the events that promote peace and tranquillity have been included in the Christmas Programme in light of the continuing crises around the globe. This includes the traditional Baby Jesus procession, which is a beloved and significant custom for a large number of locals.

According to Micallef, the Valletta Cultural Agency (VCA) has scheduled 29 events and activities in the Capital City set to take place within one month. From stilt walkers to musical choirs to performances by well-known local bands and vocalists, the schedule has it all. Visitors can expects such spectacular musical acts as The Travellers, Ira Losco, Gianluca Bezzina, Centrestage Children’s Choir, Sean & Veronique, RIONA, Opening Doors, EnKor, Malta School of Music, Kor Malta, and Choral and Orchestral Society Maria Bambina, among others.

Tonight, November 27, Christmas in the Capital will be kicked off with a lighting of the Valletta main street Christmas lights and a Christmas tree. Additionally, a traditional Christmas crib will be unveiled close to the entrance to St. John’s Co-Cathedral. The Travellers will also be debuting their song “Tridx Tkun Tiegħi Dan il-Milied” (‘Won’t you be mine this Christmas’) in an unmissable performance featuring the iconic Ira Losco and Gianluca Bezzina.

This Friday, December 1, the excitement continues as The Centerstage Children’s Choir takes the stage with their heartfelt harmonies and live Christmas carols. Furthermore, a week from today on December 5, there will be projections at St. George’s Square, the same place where the National New Year’s Eve celebrations will be held. What’s more, Christmas music will be played in Republic Street all throughout the holiday season. This year’s Christmas programme also includes street animators, pop-up events by Dancel Dance Studio, as well as children’s workshops at the Valletta Design Cluster.
