Production of Jim Cartwright’s ‘Two’ at Theatre Next Door all week

Throughout the next few days, from February 8 to 11, catch a production of the funny yet touching play ‘Two’ at Theatre Next Door.

Originally set in Northern England, the play follows the Landlord and Landlady of a certain pub. The nameless couple always welcome their regular patrants and provide them with whatever they need, whether it’s a drink, an ear, or a shoulder to cry on. Together, the two  are pillars of the community, with a reputation for keeping spirits high. But, what about them?

When a boy shows up at their door, seemingly looking for his father, the couple are reminded of their own past tragedies. The encounter forces them to knock down their walls and be honest with each other, leading to a conversation more intense than their usual bickering. In one night, this devastating piece by Jim Cartwright immerses viewers in the milieu of a working-class tavern.

The Landlord and Landlady are played by Edward Mercieca and Pia Zammit, who play all 14 characters, as in the original production. In other words, the two actors portray the main couple, as well as the dozen regulars who walk in and out of their pub. The action alternates between highlighting the many relationships and returning to the landlord and landlady each time.

Furthermore, this humorous two-hander by Jim Cartwright explores the complexities of human relationships through a sequence of duologues. The dark comedy strikes the balance between humour and pathos, eliciting both laughter and tears along the way. Presented by FM Theatre Productions, the play digs deep into the emotional core of its characters.

With a duration of 90 minutes, ‘Two’ is on at Theatre Next Door in Naxxar every evening between February 8 and 11. Secure you tickets fast, make sure to secure them here! This production is supported by Arts Council Malta.
