The Restoration of Malta's Oldest Medieval Church

Nestled within the magisterial estate of Ġnien is-Sultan, the Church of San Ċir stands as a remarkable testament to Malta’s rich medieval heritage. Believed to have been constructed between 1450 and 1500, this ancient structure is celebrated for its unique pitched roof and enduring historical significance. Despite its varied uses over the centuries, including a period as a cow shed, the Church has largely remained unchanged, preserving its original architectural charm.

The Restoration Initiative

Recognising the urgent need to conserve this national treasure, Din l-Art Ħelwa (DLĦ), a leading heritage NGO, has embarked on an ambitious restoration project to return the Church of San Ċir to its former glory. The Church, which has suffered from decades of neglect, is in a dilapidated state and requires meticulous restoration work to preserve its intricate details and historical integrity.

A Collaborative Effort

The restoration of the Church of San Ċir is not merely a project but a commitment to safeguarding Malta’s cultural heritage. Kenneth Farrugia, CEO of Bank of Valletta (BOV), expressed his satisfaction in supporting this vital conservation effort. “This initiative aligns perfectly with the Heritage arm of our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme,” Farrugia noted. “For fifty years, the community has supported us, and it is extra special to give back by preserving this gem of our heritage during our anniversary year.”

Ernest Agius, Chief Operations Officer at BOV, emphasised the collaborative nature of the project, highlighting the meticulous work required. “This restoration is not just about sponsorship. It is a commitment to our shared history. We are dedicated to making a positive impact through our CSR initiatives, whilst embracing our ESG principles. This project is a testament to this commitment.”

Commitment to Heritage

Patrick Calleja, President of DLĦ, expressed gratitude for BOV’s generous support. “On behalf of Din l-Art Ħelwa, we are truly grateful to Bank of Valletta for helping us restore this medieval Church. It has been left in a dilapidated state for decades, and we look forward to seeing it restored to its former glory.”

This partnership ensures that the Church of San Ċir will continue to be a treasured landmark for future generations. The restoration project is set to begin shortly, with both organisations committed to preserving Malta’s national heritage. Through this collaborative effort, the Church of San Ċir will not only be saved from further decay but will also stand as a revitalised symbol of Malta’s enduring history and cultural identity.
