Rune Bo Jakobsen’s ‘CUPOLA’ Solo Exhibition to Open at The Phoenicia Malta

From 1 November  to 30 November, 2024, The Phoenicia’s Palm Court Lounge in Floriana will host Rune Bo Jakobsen’s solo exhibition, CUPOLA, a vibrant exploration of Malta’s architectural heritage.

Have you ever looked up at a city’s skyline and wondered how its most iconic structures shape its identity? The CUPOLA — graceful, powerful, and often crowned in light — stands as the symbolic roof of a city. In Rune Bo Jakobsen’s upcoming solo exhibition CUPOLA, he explores how these architectural masterpieces define the character of entire towns, combining colours, light, and landscape into vibrant, energetic paintings that capture the essence of Malta’s heritage. As a Danish-Maltese artist and architect, Jakobsen examines how these structures integrate into the streetscape, interact with the skyline, and connect the sky with the land.

Rune Bo Jakobsen has held a dozen solo exhibitions over the past decade. His colourful streetscapes, portraits, and sculptures have found homes throughout Europe, Japan, the USA, and Australia. Public landmark sculptures include Olive Twist and the bronze Embryonic Horse, inaugurated in Floriana earlier this year. Jakobsen runs a full-time art studio and gallery in Central Malta, offering visitors an immersive experience of his paintings, sculptures, and experimental architecture.

Rune’s unique painting style, defined as ‘Reactive Impressionism’, is both vibrant and dynamic. Bold hues and layered brushstrokes create an energetic connection with the viewer. Inspired by Malta’s powerful sunlight transforming surfaces, he captures hidden colours in shadows and the golden glow of limestone. Using acrylic paint enhances the textures and depth of his pieces, while his architectural background subtly appears through pencil drawings or text, adding another layer of intrigue.
