MUŻA Exhibition Reunites the Legacy of Malta’s Visionary Sculptor Edward Pirotta

For the first time in nearly 60 years, an exceptional new exhibition at MUŻA – Valletta’s flagship national and community art museum – celebrates the life and work of Edward Pirotta (1939–1968), one of Malta’s most talented modern sculptors. This unprecedented display brings together Pirotta’s remarkable body of work, offering a rare opportunity to appreciate his profound contributions to the art world.

Curated by Prof. Joseph Paul Cassar, the exhibition highlights the artist’s exceptional ability to capture the human form with beauty and emotional depth. It features a stunning array of his sculptures alongside historic documents, medals, photographs of Pirotta and his work, as well as his personal toolbox.

Prof. Cassar reflected on the exhibition’s significance, stating, “This is a historic moment for Malta and for art lovers. Edward Pirotta, whose life was tragically cut short at the age of 29, was almost forgotten until this important initiative by Heritage Malta. Now, we can finally appreciate his powerful and timeless works.”

Mario Cutajar, Chairman of Heritage Malta, also expressed his excitement: “MUŻA must become the definitive home for Malta’s art and artists. This exhibition of Pirotta’s work reminds us of the immense cultural value of such artists and reinforces MUŻA’s role in ensuring that they are never forgotten.”

Accompanying the exhibition is a detailed publication authored by Prof. Cassar, which delves into Pirotta’s life and legacy. Based on over 25 years of research, it features an extensive catalogue of the artist’s works, some of which are located in Malta and others scattered across the globe, including in London, Italy, the U.S.A., Canada, Australia, and Ecuador. The book is available for purchase at MUŻA and through the Heritage Malta online store.

The exhibition will run until March 2025, and admission is included with the standard museum ticket.
