WATCH: The Newly Revamped 2km Chadwick Lakes Scenic Trail!
Join local adventurer Pierre Farrugia as he explores the freshly renovated 2km Chadwick Lakes trail, officially reopened just a few weeks ago after storm damage caused some disruption. Whether you’re an avid hiker or a nature lover, this scenic walk offers a beautiful blend of history, wildlife, and natural beauty.
Chadwick Lakes (or Wied il-Qlejgħa) is one of Malta’s most ecologically important valley systems, home to an array of unique wildlife. Here, you’ll find Malta’s only native amphibian—the painted frog—alongside indigenous trees like the White Willow and White Poplar. The area is also teeming with birds such as the European Robin, Cetti’s Warbler, and Spanish Sparrow. Trust us, the birdwatching here is top-notch!
Historically, this valley was a key source of water, helping to plan Valletta’s iconic Wignacourt aqueduct and contributing to Sir Osbert Chadwick’s groundbreaking water projects. Once the lifeblood for local communities and farmers, today it continues to serve its purpose, with the restored dams now capable of storing around 70 million litres of water, benefitting nearby agricultural areas.
The revamped trail runs from Mtarfa to Fiddien, inviting visitors to explore an area where ancient water catchments meet modern eco-innovations. The walk is perfect for everyone—whether you’re on a solo adventure, a family day out, or just looking to enjoy some peaceful time in nature. The trail is also kid-friendly, with a dedicated play area ensuring the little ones can enjoy some outdoor fun too!
You’ll love the attention to detail in the restoration work: smooth paths, reconstructed field walls, and stylish fences that are both safe and pleasing to the eye. New benches and clear signage make the walk even more enjoyable. Plus, with CCTV coverage all along the route, you can feel secure while soaking in the sights and sounds of nature.
The first section of the trail is easy to navigate, but as you move further along, it becomes more rugged and vehicle-free, offering a deeper connection with nature. Along the way, you’ll be serenaded by the soothing sounds of birds, making this a truly immersive experience.
Don’t miss out—grab your family, put on your hiking and experience the beauty of this walking trail!
