Ta’ Bistra Catacombs to Open for Free During Mosta Open Weekend

As part of Mosta open weekend, the historic Ta’ Bistra Catacombs will welcome visitors free of charge on Sunday, 30 March, 2025 from 4:00pm to 7:00 pm, and on Monday, 31 March, from 10:00am  to 4:00pm. The last admission on both days will be 30 minutes before closing time.

Located in Mosta, Ta’ Bistra Catacombs form the largest complex of Roman tombs outside the ancient city of Melite (modern Mdina and Rabat). Dating back to the early Christian period, around the 4th century AD, the site features distinct burial structures, including arched window tombs and triclinia. Originally comprising 16 groups with nearly 60 tombs, the catacombs were first excavated in 1933 and later studied extensively in 2013-2014. They are set within an ancient quarry that underwent three phases of stone extraction, one of which predates the burials, showcasing the site’s long and evolving history.

Visitors should note that on 30 March, free admission applies only between 4:00pm and 7:00pm. Regular entrance fees will be charged outside these hours.

This special opening provides a unique opportunity to explore one of Malta’s significant archaeological sites and delve into its fascinating past.
