26th International Music Festival Returns to Santa Marija Ta’ Bir Miftuħ Church with Four Concerts
The church of Santa Marija Ta’ Bir Miftuħ in Gudja will provide a stunning backdrop for the 26th Edition of the International Music Festival, which will feature four concerts between Saturday 12 April and Saturday 10 May.
The festival is set to host a musical programme, celebrating classical traditions from across Europe and bringing together world-class talent from Malta and abroad. The venue, one of Malta’s most treasured heritage sites, will host a series of evening performances, each followed by refreshments in the church’s grounds.
Concert 1 – Saturday, 12 April at 7:30 p.m
The festival opens with a performance by the renowned Karlsruhe Concert Duo, featuring Reinhard Armleder (violoncello) and Dagmar Hartmann (piano). With performances spanning over 90 countries, the duo is celebrated for their expressive interpretations and dynamic stage presence. The evening’s repertoire includes works by Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Rossini, Ravel, and Piazzolla.
Concert 2 – Friday, 25 April at 7:30 p.m
A mesmerising vocal and harp recital follows, showcasing Gillian Zammit (soprano) alongside Anne Marie Camilleri Podestà (harp), and emerging talents from the Opera Nova Project: Nicole Vassallo (mezzo soprano) and Jester Rosales (tenor). The programme includes works by Massenet, Debussy, Berlioz, Gounod, and Fauré.
Concert 3 – Friday, 2 May at 7:30 p.m
The third concert presents a string quartet performance by musicians from the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra: Inmaculada Muñoz Salgüero, Agnieska Kuzma, Ester García Salas, and Desireé Calleja. The quartet will deliver a rich Mediterranean programme featuring compositions by Turina, Toldrà, and Albéniz.
Concert 4 – Saturday, 10 May at 7:30 p.m
The festival concludes with a remarkable performance by the Re:Orchestra of Rotterdam Ensemble, under the direction of Mro. Roberto Beltrán-Zavala. The ensemble includes leading musicians such as Nicolai Bernstein (violin I), Sarah Spiteri (violin II), Hara van Amersfoort (viola), Wijnand Hulst (cello), Jessica Scerri Ellul (clarinet), Jenny Melville (oboe), and vocalists Gillian Zammit (soprano) and Clare Ghigo (mezzo soprano). Their programme will span works by Schubert, Richard Strauss, Handel, Mahler, and Karl Fiorini.
