Court Rejects Ferry Operators’ Request to Block New Booking System and Extended Swimming Zones

The environmentally fragile Blue Lagoon, part of the Natura 2000 protected network, will once again be managed through the ‘Book. Protect. Enjoy.’ visitor booking system; a sustainability initiative led by Team Blue Lagoon.

Following a court ruling on Wednesday, 14 May, a legal challenge by ferry operators to halt the initiative was rejected. The court also refused their attempt to block the extension of swimming zones in the area’s iconic crystal-clear waters.

Booking System Reopens on Monday, 19 May

From this date, visitors can once again pre-book their entry into the Blue Lagoon through the free online system:

How it works:

  • Choose from three time slots:

    • 08:00–13:00

    • 13:30–17:30

    • 18:00–22:00

  • After booking, you’ll receive a unique QR code
  • QR codes are redeemed for wristbands at the three official entry points
  • Access without a valid booking may result in a fine

In its ruling, the court emphasised that this eco-friendly initiative does not cause irreparable damage to operators, and more importantly, it serves the “national and general interest.” The court further noted that protecting the Blue Lagoon and Comino should also be a priority for those who earn a living in the area.

Launched on 1 May, the system has already shown positive results. On day one alone, over 4,800 visitors successfully booked their visit and accessed the site through the official system.

Last summer, peak hours saw the Blue Lagoon overcrowded with up to 12,000 visitors at once. The new system limits this to a maximum of 4,000 visitors at any given time, significantly reducing pressure on the ecosystem.

During the initial weeks, officials will be present to help visitors unfamiliar with the booking process, ensuring a smooth and respectful experience for all.
