Explore Rabat and Mdina by Candlelight This September
St Paul's Catacombs
On Saturday 20 September 2025, history, art and music come alive under the glow of thousands of candles as three of Malta’s most iconic sites open their doors for a magical night-time experience.
The final 2025 edition of Museums by Candlelight transforms Rabat and Mdina into a truly magical setting, with extended evening access to St Paul’s Catacombs, the Domvs Romana, and the National Museum of Natural History. From 7pm until midnight, visitors are invited to explore these historic treasures in an atmosphere illuminated by flickering candlelight and enriched with live musical performances.
Following the success of previous editions in Birgu and Valletta, the concept now moves to the timeless surroundings of Malta’s historic heart. The event promises a multisensory journey where history, culture and nature converge in an unforgettable way.
At St Paul’s Catacombs, guests can wander through underground chambers dating back to Punic, Roman, and Byzantine times, Malta’s earliest and most extensive evidence of Christianity. A replica of the George Cross will also be on display, just days after the anniversary of its 1942 public award ceremony, recalling the catacombs’ use as WWII shelters. Enhancing the atmosphere, acoustic duo Jodi & Ian will perform soulful harmonies along the candlelit pathways.
A short stroll away, the Domvs Romana invites visitors into the refined world of an aristocratic Roman household. Passing beneath its 1920s portico, guests can admire exquisite mosaics and artefacts, while the graceful notes of harpist Laetitia Troisi De Menville fill the villa’s serene spaces.
Museum of Natural History
Meanwhile, the National Museum of Natural History, housed within the Baroque Vilhena Palace, showcases wonders such as a mummified Nile crocodile, a fossilised crocodilian head from Gozo, and a giant white shark tooth. Completing the experience, Kathy the Violinist will enchant audiences with evocative violin melodies.
Admission is just €3, granting entry to all three venues. To avoid queues, pre-booking is recommended here, or at any museum or site. Tickets will also be available at the door on the night.
Comfortable clothing and footwear are advised, as the evening involves walking between venues and exploring each location on foot.
