Island of Oblivion to Premiere at PriFest in Kosovo, Showcasing Maltese Talent on the World Stage
Maltese director Jamie Vella’s Island of Oblivion, inspired by Homer’s Odyssey and linked to Gozo’s legendary Calypso’s Cave, will make its world premiere in competition at the Prishtina International Film Festival this September, a moment of pride for Malta’s growing film industry.
Based on Homer’s The Odyssey, the film offers a revisionist retelling of the chapters set on Ogygia, the mythical island where Odysseus is held captive by the nymph Calypso. Through the centuries, this island has often been identified with Gozo, home to the legendary “Calypso’s Cave” overlooking Ramla Bay.
“The film takes a personal and humanist approach to the myth, exploring timeless themes of individualism, memory, love, and the struggle between duty and selfishness,” said Vella. “With Island of Oblivion, I wanted to explore the more human aspect of Odysseus, a man fragmented by memory, immersed in bliss with Calypso, yet torn by identity and loss.”
The film was created with a modest budget but brought to life through the dedication of an extraordinary team of actors, crew, and Maltese craftspeople.
The cast includes:
- Alberto Brosio (Italy) as Odysseus
- Ariadna Cabrol (Spain) as Calypso
- Paul Portelli as Captain Eurylochus
- Jacqui Losco as Penelope
A co-production between Vella’s company Wild Skies and Malta’s established production house Pellikola, Island of Oblivion is produced by Oliver Mallia and Jamie Vella, with the support of financial incentives from the Malta Film Commission.
Producer Oliver Mallia commented:
“We are grateful for the selection of Island of Oblivion at the Prishtina International Film Festival. Showcasing Maltese stories on an international stage is always an honour, and working with emerging filmmakers like Jamie is essential for the evolution of our cinema. This film allowed us to explore new creative ground while celebrating the artistry of our cast, crew, and local craftspeople.”
The film reflects on environmental change, corruption, and the indifference of nature to human frailties, themes that resonate far beyond Malta’s shores. It previously premiered at the Valletta Film Festival and has been screened internationally.
Mallia’s producing credits include the award-winning Maltese films Shame on Dry Land (2023) and Luzzu (2021). His company Pellikola has been active for over 15 years, producing original works and servicing international productions in Malta. Its upcoming slate includes the feature films Żejtune and Burbank Syndrome.
Behind the camera, Island of Oblivion also showcases the strength of Maltese talent:
- Matthew Envin Taylor – Director of Photography
- Luke Azzopardi – Costume Designer
- Sean Vella – Composer of the Original Score
- Charlo Dalli – Production Design Lead
- Marcelle Genovese – Head of Hair Design
- Chantal Busuttil – Make-up Designer
The 17th edition of the Prishtina International Film Festival takes place from 9–14 September 2025, and is one of the few Mediterranean festivals with a dedicated competition for medium-length films (40–60 minutes).
Following its international premiere, Island of Oblivion will have its first Maltese screening on Wednesday, 8 October, 2025 at Eden Cinemas, St Julian’s.
