A Sneak Peek at Malta’s Latest Holiday Attraction,The Munita Christmas Tree
Valletta has welcomed the festive season with the launch of The Munita Christmas Tree, now standing in Freedom Square. The installation has already become a key attraction for anyone visiting the capital during the holidays.
This year’s tree was designed by Maltese make-up artist and creative designer Henry Galea, together with collaborators Jason Zerafa and Ryan Pillow. Commissioned by the Valletta Cultural Agency, the project focuses on Maltese identity and handcrafted detail.
The Munita Christmas Tree features hand-painted ornaments and the designs are inspired by the Maltese lira, the currency used in Malta before the euro. Henry chose the lira theme based on his own childhood memories, aiming to reintroduce a familiar national symbol into Malta’s contemporary festive celebrations.
The tree is scented by Stephen Cordina Aroma & Therapy, creating a recognisable festive atmosphere in Freedom Square. Henry and the team spent long hours, including an all-nighter on site, to prepare the installation ahead of its debut.
The Munita Christmas Tree serves as the starting point for Valletta’s annual festive programme, “Christmas in the Capital”. This year’s edition officially begins on November 25 at 6pm with the lighting of the Christmas decorations and the unveiling of the tree.
The programme includes cultural events, performances, markets, and family-friendly activities that will run throughout the holiday season.
With its central location, detailed artwork, and strong connection to Maltese culture, The Munita Christmas Tree is expected to be one of Valletta’s most photographed and visited installations this Christmas. Tourists are encouraged to stop by Freedom Square, explore the surrounding events, and experience the festive atmosphere in Malta’s capital.
