Festive Magic for All the Family as the Illuminated Trail Returns
Ready to get into the festive spirit? The Magical Illuminated Trail is set to light up Malta again this winter as Verdala Palace Gardens in Buskett come alive with colour from 5 December 2025 to 3 January 2026. If you are visiting the islands during the festive season, this is one of those outings that simply feels so festive to wander through, especially on a crisp evening when the glow seems to wrap itself around the gardens.
The gardens are divided into themed worlds, each with its own bit of charm. The Coral Kingdom greets you first, full of glowing sea creatures and soft shades that give the place a peaceful underwater vibe. It is gentle, cheerful and surprisingly calming, almost like stepping into an illuminated aquarium.
Alice’s Wonderland follows with its playful shapes and curious corners. Everything feels slightly topsy turvy in a way that makes both adults and children grin. It is easy to drift through slowly, noticing the little touches tucked between the trees.
Further along, the Interactive Magical Forest is where people tend to congregate most. Lights react to movement, creating small moments of surprise as you walk through the trees. Children usually race about to see what they can light up next while adults enjoy the slower pace and the warm glow all around.
Candy Land rounds off the themed areas with giant sweets and bright colours that look as though they have been lifted straight from a Christmas storybook. It is lively, cheerful and very easy to photograph if you are collecting holiday snaps.
The trail includes a Christmas Village as well, which adds a lovely festive touch. Stalls offer small gifts, handmade decorations and bits of local craft. It is a relaxed place to browse and you can usually find something charming to take home. The food court nearby serves comforting winter treats and warm drinks, and the smell of festive treats floats through the air.
The event is supported by the Malta Tourism Authority and held in aid of the Malta Community Chest Fund Foundation, so visiting also helps support charitable work on the islands.
If you are spending part of December or early January in Malta, the Magical Illuminated Trail offers a cheerful evening out with a touch of Maltese seasonal sparkle. It is friendly, colourful and easygoing, making it a pleasant addition to a winter trip without any fuss.
