Iron Island Training Camp Welcomes 105 Athletes from 11 Nations to Malta
The Iron Island Training Camp returned this year with an outstanding international turnout, welcoming 105 athletes from 11 countries: Malta, France, Italy, Ireland, Poland, Sweden, Luxembourg, Israel, Germany, the United Kingdom and Greece.
The programme featured three main sessions, catering for kids and cadets/juniors/seniors.
Friday’s opening session, led by Gianluca Barbara, focused on tactical structure, controlled exchanges and scenario-based training. On Saturday, Greek coaches Vaso and Toula Christidou delivered a technical and demanding session that challenged athletes to raise their competitive standard.
Sunday was dedicated to sparring, with centre-ring rotations creating an intense and focused atmosphere. Athletes not only competed but also observed, analysed and supported one another throughout the session.
Saturday evening included a special awards presentation. Vaso and Toula Christidou were recognised for their contribution to the camp, alongside organisers Gianluca Barbara, Michelle Chircop and Anna Vassallo.
Four athletes were honoured for their international achievements:
- Dwayne Micallef (Malta) – Kids European Champion
- Serghei Dominici (Luxembourg) – European Masters Champion
- Asaf Yasur (Israel) – Two-time World Champion and 2024 Paralympic Champion
- Adnan Milad (Israel) – European Vice Champion
Beyond the technical sessions, the camp stood out for its strong sense of community. Athletes and coaches connected across borders, sharing experience, building friendships and raising standards together. As the weekend concluded, Iron Island once again demonstrated Malta’s growing role as a hub for international Taekwondo.
