WATCH: The Busker Team Up With Gorillaz Bassist on New Single
Malta’s pop trio The Busker are back with brand new music, and this time they’ve roped in a rather impressive name. Their latest single, Bored in the Supermarket, features Seye Adelekan, best known as the touring bassist for Gorillaz. Not bad at all!
The track follows their previous release My Oh My and leans confidently into a synth-pop direction. There are warped vocal layers, punchy percussion, and of course that unmistakable Busker saxophone running through it. It feels playful, slightly unusual in places, and clearly inspired by the off-centre energy Gorillaz fans will recognise straight away.
The collaboration came about in a refreshingly simple and impressive way. After Gorillaz wrapped their tour, The Busker sent a late-night Instagram message. A short exchange later, Adelekan had recorded and sent over his bass parts. It is a wild story that shows how accessible the industry can be when you are bold enough to ask.
For those newer to the band, The Busker have been around since 2012. They originally started out busking on the streets of Malta, which is where the name came from. Over time the line-up evolved, and today the group consists of David “Dav.Jr” Meilak on lead vocals and guitar, Jean Paul Borg on drums, and Sean Meachen on saxophone. Their sound pulls in bits of indie pop, funk, rock and even a touch of 60s influence, something they have never tried to hide.
Many will know them best for representing Malta at the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 with Dance (Our Own Party). The song topped the Maltese charts for weeks and became one of the island’s most played tracks that year. Since then, they have kept busy with festival appearances, television spots and regular releases, steadily building a loyal following at home.
Behind Bored in the Supermarket, the band reunited with producers Matthew James Borg and Micimago, the same team involved in their Eurovision track. The video, directed by Steve Levi Vella, continues their Something in My Head storyline. It follows drummer Jean Paul drifting into surreal daydreams while wandering around a local supermarket. There is even a nod to Maltese pop icon Ira Losco, plus an animated segment by Andrew Scicluna, known for classic 90s Maltese cartoons.
For both visitors and locals in Malta, it is another great reminder that the island’s music scene has real character. Bored in the Supermarket is out now with its music video, and it is a fun, slightly eccentric addition to The Busker’s growing catalogue.
