Local athletes kayak from Malta to Ragusa to raise awareness about obesity

Local athletes and activists Karen Amato, Ruben Vassallo, and Daniel Seguna’s 100km journey to raise awareness about obesity began in St. Paul’s Bay Malta and ended in Marina di Ragusa in Sicily 18 hours later after “months of hard training, sacrifices, and dedication.”

They set off at 4:30am at an average of 6.5km/hr and had already reached their halfway mark by 11:30am.

Did you know that obesity has reached epidemic levels nationwide and 800 million people around the world are living with this disease? When childhood obesity goes untreated, health complications will likely continue to worsen in adulthood.

With childhood obesity being one of the greatest challenges that our nation currently faces and one that must be addressed presently, this local trio has done everything in their power to raise the necessary awareness, encourage people and and show people how to work towards a solution.

According to the athletes, with determination and a strong mindset, anything can be achieved.
